What the Folder widget does
The folder in Vealo is a widget on the wallpaper, not a File Explorer window. It shows what is inside the chosen folder and updates itself when files appear or disappear.
- Any folder. Pick one from the list of common folders, or any other folder on any drive with the Choose… button.
- Opens from the desktop. Pictures open in the Vealo viewer, folders in the panel, other files in their own program. A right-click opens a menu of actions.
- Any size you like. Drag any edge or corner to resize the panel; whatever does not fit scrolls with the mouse wheel.
- The same order as File Explorer. Files are sorted the way File Explorer sorts them: “Photo 2” comes before “Photo 10”.
How to add it in Vealo
The widget is turned on in Studio, and the folder is chosen there too.
- Open Studio: the panel hotkey, Ctrl+Shift+F by default, or click an empty spot on the desktop and then the gear.
- The Widgets tab, the Folder row: pick any view instead of “Off”.
- In the Folder row, pick a folder from the list or press Choose… and select any other one.
- Moving: with the mouse while the Widgets tab is open, or Shift plus the right mouse button at any moment, even with the panel closed. The position is remembered.
Views and settings
Two display modes and two file views.
- Expanded: a tidy panel of files right on the desktop.
- Icon: only the folder icon sits on the desktop. Hover over it and the panel grows right out of it; a click on the icon keeps it open.
- Grid and List: large icons with names, or rows of file names.
- Idle transparency: the widget almost disappears and comes back on hover. With the Vealo style and glass it hides completely, glass included. The caption with the folder name can be turned off.
- Six materials (soft, torn, Vealo, glitch, pixel, wire), colour from the theme or your own, backdrop and outline, its own size slider. More in the features reference.
- Free: the Grid view and the soft and torn materials. The List view and the other materials are part of Pro.
Tips
- Point it at the working folder of your current project: every file is at hand and the desktop stays clean.
- The Icon mode suits Downloads: the icon takes no space, and new files are one hover away.
- For a clean-looking desktop, turn off the caption and turn on idle transparency: the widget shows up only when you need it.
All eight widgets in one article: Desktop widgets for Windows. Ready desktops with widgets are in the Steam Workshop.
Questions
Are the files copied into Vealo?
No. The widget only shows what is in the folder. Files stay where they are.
Is my folder visible in a setup I publish?
No. Only the widget's look goes into the setup file: size, material, colours. The folder path and its contents stay with you.
Can I have several folders on the desktop?
For now there is one widget.
How do I move the widget?
With the mouse while the Widgets tab is open, or with Shift plus the right mouse button at any moment. The position is remembered.
What else can Vealo do?
Quite a lot. It hides the desktop icons and opens everything from a panel, sets wallpapers and video wallpapers, adds widgets (clock, weather, calendar, notes, system load, player, visualizer, folder), desktop effects, lighting in the theme colour, cursors, and ready-made looks from the Steam Workshop. The full list is on the features page.
