Desktop widgets for Windows 11 and 10

Clock, weather, calendar, notes and system load right on the wallpaper, not in windows. Below: what counts as a desktop widget at all, and how it works in Vealo: six widgets from one place, with a shared style and mouse drag.

Clock, weather, notes and system load in the same “soft” material. This is how widgets look on the wallpaper.

1

What desktop widgets are

A desktop widget is a small block of information that lives right on the wallpaper: the time, the weather, a to-do list, CPU load. The key difference from a regular program is that a widget is not a window. It does not show up in the taskbar, does not ask for focus and sits under program windows. Open a browser and the widget hides beneath it. Minimise everything and it is back.

A good widget answers a question at a glance and needs no clicks. A bad one turns into yet another window you have to close.

2

How it works in Vealo

All six widgets live in one Studio tab and follow the same rules, so the desktop looks like one piece rather than a pile of unrelated boxes.

  • One style for all. The player, calendar, weather, system load and notes share five materials (soft, torn, glitch, pixel, wire); the clock has its own layouts and fonts instead. Colour for all comes from the theme or your own with an eyedropper. Change the theme and every widget recolours at once.
  • On the wallpaper, under windows. Widgets are not windows: they do not appear in the taskbar, do not take focus, do not get in the way. Minimise everything and they are there.
  • Drag with the mouse. With the Widgets tab open just drag; at any other moment hold Shift and the right mouse button. The position is remembered per monitor.
  • They travel with the desktop. Widgets and their positions are saved in profiles and in Workshop setups: apply someone's setup and the widgets are already in place.

The six Vealo widgets

In short; the details live in the features reference.

  • Clock. Four layouts (Grand, Skyline, Line, Stack), fourteen display fonts, scale up to 300 percent, seconds, 12 or 24 hours, your own language for the captions.
  • Weather. Five views, the city is detected automatically, forecast and feels-like temperature, hand-drawn icons.
  • Calendar. Line, day, week, month and year, today is highlighted, language and first day of the week are yours.
  • Notes. Sticker, checklist, line, focus and progress; checkboxes are ticked right on the desktop.
  • System load. CPU, memory, disk, network, battery, GPU with its temperature and video memory, FPS and ping in games; five layouts and an over-the-game mode.
  • Player. Shows the track playing in any app, buttons work on the desktop, with a compact line and an “always on the desktop” mode.
The player, calendar, weather, system load and notes are painted with one brush: five materials (soft, torn, glitch, pixel, wire), backdrop, outline. The clock changes layout and font instead of material. Colour for all comes from the theme or your own with an eyedropper, each has its own size slider. The Roulette redresses the enabled widgets in one material per roll.

How to add and set up

  1. Open Studio: the panel hotkey, Ctrl+Shift+F by default, or click an empty spot on the desktop and then the gear.
  2. The Widgets tab. Every widget has its own row: view, style and settings. The first chip in the VIEW row is “Off”.
  3. Turn on the ones you need. They land in the left column of the desktop, the calendar in the right one.
  4. Dragging: with the mouse while the Widgets tab is open, or Shift plus the right mouse button at any moment, even with the panel closed. The position is remembered per monitor.
  5. Double-click a widget on the desktop to open its tab in Studio.
Widgets do not load the computer: they redraw once a second or less often, and in a full-screen game the desktop effects freeze and free the GPU.

Questions

Will widgets get in the way of windows?

No. They sit on the wallpaper under program windows and are visible only on an empty desktop or when windows are minimised.

Do widgets work on two monitors?

Yes. Every widget can be dragged to any screen, and the position is remembered per monitor.

Do widgets load the computer?

No. They redraw once a second or less often, a fraction of a percent of CPU. In full-screen games the desktop effects freeze.

What happens to widgets after a restart?

They come back to their places. Vealo starts with Windows and remembers the layout.

Is internet needed?

Only for the weather, to refresh the forecast. The other widgets work fully offline.

What else can Vealo do?

Quite a lot. It hides the desktop icons and opens everything from a panel, sets wallpapers and video wallpapers, adds widgets (clock, weather, calendar, notes, system load, player), desktop effects, lighting in the theme colour, cursors, and ready-made looks from the Steam Workshop. The full list is on the features page.
