OpenRGB and Logitech G: lighting in your desktop colour

Logitech has its own app, G HUB, and it lets nobody else touch the lighting. There is one free way around it: OpenRGB. It takes the keyboard, mouse and mousepad under its control, and Vealo paints them in the theme colour and runs effects through it. The point is that one app lights every device at once: Logitech, Corsair, SteelSeries and the motherboard with one effect and one colour. Below is the whole setup and the one mistake that turns your lighting into a strobe.

1

What you need and what matters

Three things: a Logitech device from the OpenRGB list, OpenRGB itself, and G HUB closed.

  1. Check your device in the supported list right here, in the field below. It has the G203, G Pro and G502 mice, the G Pro and G915 keyboards, the Powerplay mousepad and a few dozen more models, but not every revision.
  2. Close Logitech G HUB completely, from the tray, not with the window's cross. A device can have only one owner.
  3. Remove G HUB from startup, otherwise it grabs the lighting again after a reboot.
Start typing to search the device list.

If G HUB and OpenRGB run at the same time, two streams of commands with different LED layouts hit the device and the lighting starts to flicker. It is not a fault, it is two owners.

Setting up OpenRGB

Done once. After that OpenRGB starts with Windows, sits quietly in the tray, and Vealo finds the devices by itself.

  1. Download OpenRGB from the official site openrgb.org and install it.
  2. Open it, go to Settings, then General Settings, and tick three boxes: Start At Login, Start Minimized and Start Server.
  3. Close the window. Make sure the device appears in the OpenRGB list; if not, press Rescan Devices there.

The Start Server box is the important one: without it OpenRGB runs, but nobody can talk to it, and Vealo will say so in the lighting tab.

3

Turn sync on in Vealo

The app connects to OpenRGB by itself and checks the link every two seconds while lighting is on.

  1. Open Vealo, the Lighting tab, and press Sync. The devices found appear in the status line.
  2. Device not in the list: press Find devices, OpenRGB rescans the hardware without opening its window. OpenRGB not running: the Start OpenRGB button brings it up.
  3. Pick an effect and a colour. By default the colour comes from the desktop theme and changes with it; your own colour is set with the eyedropper.
  • Theme colour. If the lighting colour follows the theme, change the theme or the wallpaper and the lighting repaints itself.
  • Per-LED effects. Wave, fire, rain and the rest run along the keyboard by the index of every LED, not one colour over everything.
  • One tab for every brand. Logitech, Corsair, SteelSeries and the motherboard are lit from one place with one effect.
  • Free to test. Static and breathing are in the free version, so you can test the connection on your own hardware before buying anything. The other effects are in Pro.

Questions

The lighting flickers and changes colour on its own.

Logitech G HUB and OpenRGB are running at the same time and both send commands to the device. Close G HUB from the tray and remove it from startup.

OpenRGB is running, but Vealo says the server is off.

The Start Server box is not ticked in the OpenRGB settings. Tick it and restart OpenRGB, or press Start OpenRGB in Vealo.

Vealo does not see the mouse, though the keyboard lights up.

The device was plugged in after OpenRGB started, and it scans the hardware once. Press Find devices in Vealo.

Do I still need G HUB for anything?

Not for lighting. If you use it for buttons, DPI or macros, remember that it takes the lighting back every time it starts: set things up, close it and remove it from startup.

Does this work without Vealo Pro?

Yes. The connection, the theme colour, static and breathing are free. Pro unlocks the other effects.

What else can Vealo do?

Quite a lot. It hides the desktop icons and opens everything from a panel, sets wallpapers and video wallpapers, adds widgets (clock, weather, calendar, notes, system load, player), desktop effects, lighting in the theme colour, cursors, and ready-made looks from the Steam Workshop. The full list is on the features page.
